OKA - Spavinaw Lake (NE Trail)
On May 2nd, the Oklahoma Kayak Anglers (OKA) – Northeastern Trail held the 3rd tournament of the 2015 Spring series on Spavinaw lake. The weather forecast called for a sunny sky with 10 – 15 mph winds out of the South tournament end. Water clarity was much clearer than years past with about 10 feet of visibility.
As the tournament director (John Brain Dunbar) yelled, “Go”, at safe light, 24 kayak anglers headed quickly to their fishing spots to try to fish the remainer of the top water bite. About 2 hours into the tournament, the Northern 5 – 7 mph winds turned to a Southern 10 – 12 mph winds. With the bluebird skies, extreme water clarity and wind, the fishing conditions could have been described as tough at best.
Lucas Steward took 1st place and $330 with a 5 fish limit and a total length of 86” Of the 24 anglers, Lucas was the only person to catch more than 3 fish for a tough day of fishing. The other key note of the day for Lucas was that he did not catch his first fish until 5 hours into the 8 hour tournament. . He caught his fish after 11:30, he was slowly fishing a jig and pig through the vegetation flats. Scott Moseman took 2nd place and $180 with 3 fish and a total length of 51.75”, and Chad Muller took 3rd place and $90 with 3 fish and a total length of 42.25”. The Hook1 Big Bass of the day went to Dave Fineran with a nice 20.25” fish, he took home $140 and a $50 gift card to Hook1 Oklahoma. Nice job gentlemen!
Thanks to our generous sponsors for making this an awesome event! The OKA tournament trail wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for our sponsor support. Also, we want to thank the city of Spavinaw for hosting us at an awesome Oklahoma lake. Thank you.
